About Carolyn
My story is not one of significant weight loss or a lifelong struggle with weight. I’ve always been a healthy weight and never had to try very hard to lose weight. I didn’t think I needed a wellness program… until March of 2020.
My story begins in June of 2019.
I left my home at 5AM for a simple outpatient surgery to remove a benign tumor. My mother-in-law stayed with the kids, but I didn’t tell them about the surgery. I was scheduled to be home that afternoon. But things did not go as planned. Five hours after entering the operating room, I woke up wondering what happened.
I was diagnosed with cancer.
After going through 6 rounds of chemotherapy, my healthy eating habits fell by the wayside to stop the constant nausea. I consumed mostly bread and comfort foods. After chemo was finished, I looked forward to a full recovery but after 3 months I still couldn’t get through the day without falling motionless on the couch in desperate need of sleep. I gained over 10 pounds but was too tired to exercise and too addicted to carbs to eat healthy.
I have 3 little kids and I could not keep up with them.
I asked my trainer at the YMCA, “when will I feel better? What will I have more energy?” She told me that it takes most cancer patients a year to recover from chemotherapy. A year?! I didn’t have that kind of time!
So, I decided I needed a change and attended a Health and Hope party. After hearing success stories about more energy and less brain fog, I decided I would try the program. Within 1 week after starting, I had more energy and cut my coffee intake in half. No more naps! I could play tennis and monkey-in-the-middle with my kids again!
Now, I am finally able to be the mom that I want to be and the mom that my kids need me to be!
In a short time, I lost 14 pounds to include the weight gained from 3 pregnancies and the post-chemotherapy emotional eating. I am back down to the weight I was when I got married and I feel so much more confident. But most important is the energy, the ability to play with my 3 precious little girls (ages 4, 6, and 9), and all that I have learned about leading a healthy lifestyle.
